Speech summary from crisismonitor.gr:
The issue of food security is critical and must be addressed at the national, European and international levels, at a time when the Food Price Index (FAO) is showing an increase of 18% in 2022, with a forecast of 6% in 2023 and stabilization in 2024, according to Dimitrios Iatridis, former Special Secretary for Community Resources and Infrastructure at the Ministry of Rural Development and Food, Executive Director of the Association of Greek Ports. As he said, it is not only the effects of the war that affect prices, since even weather phenomena affect costs in production, storage and transport. Especially in Greece, according to Mr. Iatridis, we must have a strategy for food security. He indicated the need to support young farmers, to produce more products (in sectors such as dairy, oil, honey, vegetables, etc.) and furthermore - given that 85% of global trade is carried out by sea - to align ports and ships with the goals for sustainable development, green and digital transition.
