MYKONOS PORT: ANTI-POLLUTION EXERCISE AT THE NEW PORT OF MYKONOS FOR THE PROTECTION OF THE MARINE ENVIRONMENT

The Marine Pollution Response Training, which took place last Tuesday, 28 and Wednesday, 29 April 2026, was successfully completed this year as part of the efforts of the Municipal Port Fund of Mykonos regarding the Protection of the Marine Environment, in view of the new tourist season.

The exercise was carried out in collaboration with the specialized company “Metopi Environmental Protection Consultants” and included theoretical training at the Grypario Cultural Center on the first day and practical training on the second day at the New Port.

The program, in its theoretical aspect, provided for the explanation of the contents of the three (3) Containers and the luggage compartment, where all of the anti-pollution equipment of the Mykonos DLT is stored, as well as the demonstration of the use of absorbent and adhesive materials, the quick couplings of the floating barriers, and the Skimmer of the PPC/ASP of Mykonos.

Immediately afterwards, the planned Anti-Pollution Exercise was carried out, which concerned the alleged spill of oil waste from a CATAMARAN Sailing Vessel which was moored alongside at the boat shelter in the New Port of Mykonos. To deal with it, the trunk was transported with the help of the 4X4 vehicle of the DLT, where there are always 150 meters of floating barriers offshore.

Then, with the assistance of the PPC/ASP Mykonos vessel, which actively participated in this year's training, the necessary length of floating barriers for the scenario was towed, with the aim of trapping the alleged pollution within them.

Immediately afterwards, the dam was properly anchored, in order to trap the maximum amount of debris, and to complete the process, appropriate absorbent materials (dams) were placed at the edges of the floating dams, in order to prevent the alleged leak from escaping through the gaps that always exist.

After the recovery of the leaked Petroleum Products, mainly with the use of the PPC Skimmer, in combination with the use of appropriate absorbent materials for the residues of the Petroleum Products, the Exercise was marked by its end, which was a complete success.

The President of the Board of Directors of the Mykonos Port Fund, Ath. Kousathanas – Megas, warmly thanked all those who participated, and specifically the staff of the DLT, the PPC/ASP of Mykonos, which participated again in a joint exercise (after 2018), the Port Authority officials (Port Master, Deputy Port Master, Vessel Captain, etc.), as well as the volunteers, for their active participation and assistance and expressed the belief that “with everyone’s help, we will be able to deal with a real incident immediately and effectively.”
