Mykonos Municipal Port Fund (M.P.F.M.)

Mykonos has two ports in operation. The old port of Mykonos in the center of the island and the new port which is located 3,5 km north of the island, in the area of Tourlos.

The new port is under construction, and was created to meet the growing transportation needs of the island and will become, upon completion, one of the largest infrastructure projects for the island of Mykonos.

The Municipal Port Fund of Mykonos is called upon to offer public utility services and contribute to the economic development of the Island, the Cyclades, the Chora and the European Union.

has had significant tourist traffic for a long period of time, and despite its small size has emerged as one of the most popular destinations in the world. In combination with legislative frameworks that have classified the Ports of Mykonos as Ports of International Interest (Government Gazette 202/16-02-07), their importance in terms of their impact on the country's international and national transport network is evident.

Historical events of the Old Port.

The first plan was completed by a Frenchman in 1686, Tournefort's drawing was made in 1717 and the first plan by Th. Hope was in 1790. At the end of the 18th century the market of Polichna was expanded. In 1822, 22 ships were listed and 60 ships are mentioned between 1860 – 1870. In 1901 the sea front was widened and the pier was extended by Mich. Campanas. The new pier was created in 1970, while in 1980 all the improvements were made.

Historical events of the New Port.

During 1992, the government, recognizing the problems the island was facing from the increasing tourist traffic, took radical decisions and prepared a comprehensive development program for the tourist and passenger port, as well as an inland marina. During 1995, the construction phase of the project began, by the Ministry of Environment and was co-financed by National Resources and the second Community Support Framework.

During 1999, the 1st stage was completed with a budget of approximately €17,5 million and the new port began. The 2nd stage took place between 2000-2002. During this period, warehouses, wc, electric lighting and architectural design of the islet surface in the Schengen area were completed.

This was followed by the 3rd stage from 2006 to 2010, in which work was carried out on the passenger-commercial section of the port, east of the bridge with facilities for serving passengers and ships and improving the road network up to the junction of the Peripheral Road. The last stage will cost approximately €20,5 million.

Today, the construction of the port is in its 4th stage, during which buildings for cruise ships and commercial terminals are being constructed. The two ports of Mykonos, along with the island's major tourist attraction, have become the most popular destinations for speedboats and yachts in the Mediterranean today, and coexist with fishing boats and boats that operate daily routes to Delos.
