Patras Port Authority (OPA)

The port of Patras since the 11thο BC century has been connected with the historical development of Patras and the wider region. Since 1872, when serious infrastructure was created in the new port, the economic and social development of the region began to be linked to it. Patras, as a commercial and industrial center, contributed economically to the completion of the "Great Idea" for Greece of Eleftherios Venizelos.

After the effects of deindustrialization, new growth rates must be sought for the region so that it can evolve from the city with the many "chimneys and sirens" of the 60s to the city of "technology and innovative services" of the 2020s. The words of Abraham Lincoln "We must plan for the future, because people who stay stuck in the present will remain in the past.» are always relevant, especially in times of intense competitiveness in economic activities.

The mission and vision of OLPA S.A.

The mission and vision of OLPA S.A. within the framework of the new European port policy and the increased geo-strategic role of the port in the maritime artery of South-Eastern Europe is the "Development of the Port as Greece's main Western Gateway to Italy and the EU."

Patras Port Authority Administration

The Strategic Goals for the coming years are:

  • The maintenance and strengthening of the role of the OLPA and the development of the port as Greece's main passenger and commercial gateway to Italy and the European Union.
  • Improving infrastructure and competitiveness to enter new markets (e.g. cruise services, etc.).
  • The development of good communication and cooperation relations with the local community and the undertaking and further strengthening of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) actions for the benefit of society as a whole.

The Management of OLPA S.A., in the context of achieving the port as an integrated multimodal transport corridor, aims to:

  • Improving infrastructure to address the increasing capacity of the Adriatic-Ionian sea corridor in passengers and goods.
  • Increasing the company's profitability and improving efficiency through service redesign.
  • Strengthening competitiveness and cooperation between the ports of Greece and the Mediterranean with the aim of unifying them within the framework of the Trans-European Transport Networks (TEN-T).
  • Improving the quality and integration of the services provided, so that it can be used as a hub for combined - intermodal transport (International Transport Chain).
  • Contribution to national economic and social policy within the framework of the Stability and Growth Program.

In a Europe where maritime transport accounts for 70% of all transport between the EU and the rest of the world, the ports of the South-Eastern Mediterranean and in particular the port of Patras must redefine its strategy, taking into account the new data in maritime transport, e.g. the development of cruise tourism, etc. And of course, its regional role and organizational structure distinguish it from the phenomenon of "ports of convenience" that unfortunately exist in our country.

OLPA S.A. is the most important public interest organization that contributes decisively to the economic and social development of Patras and the wider region. Within the framework of a broader plan for a competitive port industry in our country, it plans and evaluates the comparative advantages in order to emerge as a pole of regional maritime development in cooperation and with distinct roles with the corresponding organizations of the port region of South-Western Greece.

OLPA S.A. with its daily action aims at the cooperation and coordination of all Port services, shipping and commercial enterprises and generally all those involved in order to provide comprehensive and qualitatively upgraded services to customers, users and citizens.

It is evident that the economic crisis has affected maritime transport and thus OLPA S.A. is planning an aggressive policy:
a) with expansion into the cruise and large yacht sectors and
b) by upgrading services with new modern infrastructure.

Also, the search for a strategic investor for the Container Terminal (SEMPO) continues, which will introduce the port into the Greek/Cypriot traffic market for the first time in its modern history.

The real estate of OLPA. S.A. (formerly Piraiki - Patraiki) with a total area of 200 acres is being utilized as a center for accompanying services of the Port of Patras. For the cruise and the entry of OLPA. S.A. into this market that is shaping up in new data for our country after its lifting, cabotage, a series of actions and collaborations have been launched.

Finally, it is trying, in collaboration with Shipping Companies, to create and research new port transport possibilities from Patras to other ports of the Adriatic Sea.

The increasing trend of cruises in the Mediterranean and the shift of interest from the Caribbean to this region by major cruise companies creates significant opportunities and prospects for the Port of Patras. A key condition for success is a well-considered, methodical and persistent approach to the project.

The Port of Patras Organization (PPO) S.A. is a Societe Anonyme established by Law 2932/01 (Government Gazette 2261/27.06.01) and is the evolution of the Port Fund of Patras, which was a public legal entity.
