Volos Port Authority (VPO)
The maritime communication of the Volos region with other parts of the Aegean begins at the end of the Neolithic period, as evidenced by the archaeological findings in the two Neolithic settlements of Sesklos and Dimini. The first maritime communication was with Macedonia and Thrace. During the Bronze Age, maritime transport increased and expanded from the north and northeast to the southern Aegean and Crete.
From 1988 until today, the port of Volos has maintained the third position among Greek ports in terms of cargo handling. The port is located at latitude 39°, 20', 26'' and longitude 22°, 51', 03''.

From 1881 to 1973, the Volos Port Fund was the administrative body of the port of Volos. The Volos Port Fund, like the other Port Funds, operated as a Legal Entity of Public Law, under the supervision of the Ministry of National Economy. In 1973, it was merged with the Skopelos Port Fund under the common name "Magnesia Port Fund". By Law 2932/2001, the Magnesia Port Fund was divided again into the Volos Port Fund and the Skopelos Port Fund. By the same Law, the Volos Port Fund was abolished and replaced by the Societe Anonyme "Volos Organization (OLB S.A.)" as the administrative and management body of the port of Volos, which assumes all the rights and obligations of the abolished Port Fund. OLB S.A. was established as a Public Benefit Societe Anonyme with the Greek State as its sole shareholder.
All facilities of the port of Volos were granted to O.L.B. S.A. by the Greek State through a relevant contract signed in November 2002. According to the contract, the duration of the concession is set at forty (40) years, with the possibility of extension by a maximum of ten (10) years. The annual consideration for the concession is set in articles 5.2 and 5.3 of the contract.
