The Port of Lavrio Authority S.A., as Coordinator of the Consortium of the European project DECOMPRESS, organized in collaboration with WMG Sustainable Innovation the conference "Breaking Barriers, Powering the Future: Vision and Challenges of Shore-Side Electricity in Ports"The conference, which was held under the auspices of the Hellenic Ports Association (E.LIM.E.E), was held on February 12, 2026 at the Eugenides Foundation and had as its subject the development of infrastructure for the supply of electricity from shore to docked ships (Shore-Side Electricity – SSE).
The DECOMPRES project is being implemented by a Consortium with the Lavrio Port Authority S.A. as Coordinator and the Port Authorities of Rafina S.A., Corfu S.A. and Kavala S.A. as partners, the Hellenic Holdings and Property Company S.A. (Groll17022026owthfund), HEDNO S.A., the companies WMG Sustainable Innovation, PROTASIS and HYDRUS, as well as the Maritime Transport Laboratory of the National Technical University of Athens. The aim of the Consortium is the technical and operational preparation of Greek ports for the implementation of SSE infrastructure, within the framework of European decarbonization policies and relevant regulatory obligations by 2030.
At the start of the works, the CEO of Lavrio Port Authority S.A., Mr. Georgios Vakondios, emphasized that the electrification of ports constitutes a strategic priority for the country's port system and requires comprehensive energy planning, institutional coordination and timely adaptation of Master Plans.
The conference brought together representatives of the European Commission (DG MOVE), the European Ports Organisation (ESPO), Greek and international ports, energy bodies and the maritime community, as well as international certification bodies and technology providers. During the proceedings, the current regulatory framework, technical requirements, electrical power adequacy, interoperability issues and available financing options were analyzed.
A common finding of the participants was that the successful implementation of Shore-Side Electricity requires close cooperation between ports, network operators, energy bodies and the maritime community, implementation support through financial tools, as well as the formation of sustainable business models.
The Port of Lavrio S.A., within the framework of its coordinating role in the DECOMPRES project, continues to work systematically for the technical maturity and coordinated transition of Greek ports to a modern, environmentally sustainable and competitive energy model.
