Eight new hybrids straddle Carriers, part of the new development phase of the Port of Thessaloniki, upgrade its service, storage capacity and energy efficiency.
The Thessaloniki Port Authority S.A. has received and is putting into operation eight new hybrid diesel-electric Straddle Carriers - Container Stowage and Transport Vehicles (OSME) - further renewing the mechanical equipment of the Container Terminal (S.E.M.P.O.), in parallel with the progress of the Pier 6 expansion project, and strengthening the operational dynamics of the Port of Thessaloniki.
The new equipment supply is part of the broader investment program of ThPA S.A. for the continuous upgrade and modernization of the port of Thessaloniki, with the aim of increasing efficiency, improving the quality of traffic service and strengthening its competitiveness. Since 2018, ThPA S.A. has already modernized its mechanical equipment with the supply of twelve Straddle Carriers, a new Mobile Harbour Crane, as well as two new specially designed New Panamax bridge cranes, capable of serving mainline ships with a capacity of over 10.000 TEU.
The new Straddle Carriers, of European construction and hybrid technology, achieve higher energy efficiency, reduced fuel consumption by 18% and lower emissions. In this way, they contribute to the gradual transition of the Port of Thessaloniki to a more environmentally responsible operating model, while enhancing the operational capabilities and autonomy required for the smooth operation of the Container Terminal.
The operational contribution of the investment is particularly significant. With the integration of the new machines into the port's OSME fleet, the container transport and stacking equipment is modernized and the storage capacity of the Container Station square is substantially enhanced. The new Straddle Carriers allow for more efficient use of the available space, thanks to the ability to stack containers at more levels in height. In addition, they contribute to faster service for both trucks and container ships, enhancing the overall productivity of the S.E.M.P.O. and reducing waiting and service times. This upgrade has a direct impact on the flow of freight transport, on the decongestion of the gates and on the overall experience of the port's users and partners.
